Reported speech revision (1st & 2nd BAT)

REPORTED SPEECH 


KEY:

Change the sentences into indirect speech:

1-      “I am going out now, but I’ll be in by nine”, he said.
He said (that) he was going out then but (that) he would be in by nine.

2-      “I’m working in a restaurant, and don’t much care for it” she said.
She said that she was working in a restaurant and she didn’t much care for it.

3-      “ I  can’t live on my basic salary” said Peter “I’ll have to offer to do overtime”
Peter said that he couldn’t live on his basic salary and (that) he would have to offer to do overtime.

4-      “What happened to Mr Budd? One of the men asked me
One of the men asked what had happened to Mr Budd.

5-      Which of his sons inherited his estate? She asked the lawyer
She asked the lawyer which of her sons had inherited her estate.

6-      I’ve been in London for a month but I haven’t had time to visit the tower” Rupert told me
Ruper told me (that) he had been in London for a month but (that) he hadn’t had time to visit the tower.

7-      “How much does a train return to Bath cost? Mrs Jones asked
Mrs Jones asked how much a train return to Bath cost.

8-      The new underpass is being officially opened the day after tomorrow”, said the BBC announcer
The BBC announcer said (that) the new underpass was being officially opened the day after that day.

9-      “We have moved into our new flat” my aunt said
My aunt said they had moved into their new flat.

10-  ” Have you seen the library?” Ann asked
Ann asked (me) if/whether I had seen the library.

11-  “Can I bring my dog into the compartment with me?” She asked
She asked if/whether she could bring her dog into the compartment with her.

12-  “I’ll come with you as soon as I am ready” She told him.
She told him she would go with him as soon as she was ready.

13-  “I have a German lesson this afternoon and I haven’t done my homework yet”, the boy told his mum.
The boy told his mum (that) he had a German lesson that afternoon but (that) he hadn’t done his homework yet.

14-  “If you let the iron get too hot you will scorch your clothes” I warned her
I warned her not to let the iron get too hot.

15-  “You haven’t given me quite enough”, he pointed out.
He pointed out that I hadn’t given him quite enough.

16-   Will you have time to play regularly? He wanted to know
He wanted to know if/whether I would have time to play regularly.

17-  “Whose car did you borrow last night?”, Jack asked her.
Jack asked her whose car she had borrowed the night before/ the previous night.

18-  “Do you know that the shoes you are wearing aren’t a pair? Mum asked me.
Mum asked me if I knew that the shoes I was wearing weren’t a pair.

19-   “Switch off the TV” She begged me.
She begged me to switch off the TV.

20-   “It isn’t so foggy today as it was yesterday”, I remarked.
I remarked (that) it wasn’t so foggy that day as it was the day before.

21-  “You haven’t given me quite enough. The bill is for $14 and you’ve paid me only $13” , he pointed me out.
He pointed me out (that) I hadn’t given him quite enough and that the bill was for $14 and had paid him only $13.

22-   “I am a good cook and I do all my own washing”, she said.
She said (that) she was a good cook and (that) she did all her own washing.

23-  “Which team won the previous match? asked Peter.
Peter asked which team had won the previous match.

24-  “Who owns this gun?” asked the detective.
The detective asked who owned that gun.

25-   “Think well before you answer”, the teacher told the pupils
The teacher told the pupils to think well before their answered.

26-  “Go, get me a paper and come straight back” he said to me.
He said to me to go and get him/her a paper and go straight back.

27-  “Don’t bathe when the red flag is flying” the lifeguard warned us.
The lifeguard warned us not to bath when the red flag was flying.
28-  “Would you like a cigarette?” he invited me
He invited me to a cigarette.

  1. “Will you help me with the bags ?”, she asked me.
She asked me if/ whether I would help her with the bags.

  1. “Could you open this tin for me, please?”, he asked me.
He asked me to open that tin for him.

  1. “Would you like to come with me to the theatre?”, he asked her.
He asked her if/ whether she would like to go with him to the theatre.

INDIRECT SPEECH: STATEMENTS (1, 3, 10, 19, 25, 28, 31)
  1.   I said to her I had something to show her.
  2.   He said to his mother he was going away the day after/ the following day/ the next day.
  3.   His daughter said she had no idea what the time was but she would dial 8081 and find out.
  4. He said that if he pressed the ear against the wall he could hear what the people in the next flat were saying.
  5.  She said that she had to go out then/ at that moment to post a letter.
  6. Bill said that he had missed the train and that he would be late for work and his boss would be furious.
